There have been 48 Tevis rides to date, with 2 ties, for a total of 50 winners. Of those winners, 32 are purebred Arabs that are registered, hence have researchable pedigrees. Of the 18 not won by purebred Arabs, all but 2 have been won either by partbreds or horses listed as Arabs, but for whom we cannot find any registration records. The Haggin Cup was introduced later. There have been 38 Haggin Cups awarded. 21 of these have been won by registered purebred Arabs. Of the 17 not won by purebreds, all but 4 have been won by partbreds or horses listed as Arabs. Of Tevis winners (counted per win, not per horse--horses with multiple wins are counted more than once): --32 are registered purebred Arabians Of the 20 Tevis winners who do not qualify
as CMK: Of the 4 partbred Tevis wins where I've been
able to document ancestry to date: Of Haggin
Cup winners: Of the 11 that are not CMK: I've been able so far to document 3 partbred
Haggin winners-- Is this significant? Consider the following. In the early days of WSTR, CMK and other horses now considered to be preservation horses were the norm in our breeding population. However, CMK horses have been dwindling dramatically since the early 70's as CMK mares have been increasingly top-crossed to modern imported sires. The current estimate is that by the 1990's, only 3 to 5% of our American gene pool of purebred Arabians consisted of CMK horses. And the CMK percentage in those who don't qualify as CMK is likewise dwindling. And yet--in sports such as endurance that require athleticism, metabolic capability, and trainability, the CMK horses and CMK blood STILL DOMINATES. Of the 12 Tevis wins by CMK horses, 8 have occurred since 1980. This is a work in progress. At some point, I hope to also document the Arab ancestry of as many of the partbred Tevis and Haggin Cup winners as possible. ------Heidi Smith DVM, Sagehill Arabians, Tendoy, Idaho
